In Memory of Bruce Short - Class of 1973

This is Beverly Short, Bruce's wife. The message that was sent to Andy [Maples] was that Bruce died on September 6th, and that they think it had something to do with his heart. We are waiting on an autopsy report. He was napping like he would often do because he learned to nap at Ben Lippen, and when I went in to talk to him, he would not wake up.

Our twin sons have just started college, and he was so happy for them.

Bruce and I had fond memories of the 30 year reunion, and he often talked about how I seemed to fit in with everyone, and you would have thought that it was my class reunion.

My sister was wondering if he was the first in the class to die. I do not remember at the reunion having a memorial for the classmates that were no longer living.

Beverly Short,
Brad and Michael

I'll always remember Bruce from hang gliding days. Ultimately thru his friendship, I feel fortunate that I got to know Beverly and the boys. Bruce was a great surgeon and I'll always appreciate Bruce as my surgeon and friend. I have fond memories of his whole family, especially his laugh, sense of humor, and generosity. If there were more like Bruce and his family, the world would be a better place. Margaret Harris

Bruce will be fondly remembered by myself and may other hang glider pilots. His bright smile after a great soaring flight always brought cheer to the end of a flying day. In years past, Bruce was famous for his incredible Independence Day displays of fireworks. He could illuminate the sky with those fireworks nearly as bright as his smile could brighten a crowd! I will miss Doctor Bruce -- but a bit of his handiwork will always remain with me. He helped repair my ankle after a skiing injury, and a bit of his skill and talent keeps me walking straight every day!

I don't know how to express in words the loss I feel. I worked with Dr. Short for so many years and I learned a lot as an assistant because He was such an excellent teacher and Dr. His honesty and dedication was like none I have ever seen in a person. If he said it ....you knew he meant it. He was a very good friend to me always. I will never forget him and the way he was. It was an honor to have known him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, sons and family.

To the Family of Dr Bruce Short: I offer my condolences. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Please take comfort in knowing what a better place your loved one made this world. My family and I were patients of Dr. Shorts for 10+ years. We met him under the worst condintions of a near fatal accident. There is no doubt in my mind that Dr. Short was "a gift from God to us". First we knew him as a brilliant surgeon, then as an honorable man and a great friend. There will be wonderful memories in every life he touched.

Dr. Short was one in a MILLION! In my eyes larger than life, in so many ways. Family man, friend, and "Brillant" doctor. It was an honor & privilege to have known and worked with him at "CBJS" office. His patients, and his craft is a testimonial to him. I will miss him so much, he will be long remembered. My prayers are with the Short family. God Bless you.

My deepest sympathies to your family at the loss of Bruce. I knew him back in the early 80's when I was a student at UTC/hang glider pilot and he was a chef and pilot. We played on the same softball and volleyball team. He was a great guy and one of the smartest guys I ever knew. He set the record for airtime over Lookout in the summer of 80 when it was sorable everyday for a month. He got over 100 hours airtime in one month.... a record. He saw it as a challenge and it took it seriously. He was always up to the challenge.

I have faith that he is flying free now... like most hang glider pilots including myself hope for in heaven. God's Speed to you Bruce; I will always remember you buddy and we will fly together again someday.

I was tremendously saddened to hear of Dr. Short's sudden death. In 2000, I broke my ankle on the day before Thanksgiving. It was a very severe and painful break, but Dr. Short was so reassuring and kind. He did the surgery late that evening and was back to the hospital early on Thanksgiving morning to check on me. I know it must have been hard on your family at times when he had to be at the hospital on weekends and holidays, but you will never know how much I appreciated his being there. As I recovered, he was a pleasure to work with--so knowledgeable, witty, and personable. He was never in a hurry to get finished with our visits, and I felt like he was truly a friend rather than just a surgeon. I will be praying for your family in the days ahead.

I am shocked and saddened by the passing of Dr. Short. He was my doctor for several years and took excellent care of me, including a successful total knee replacement last year. When I was in to see him for a follow-up visit earlier this year, he was, as always, gracious and welcoming -a strong, friendly handshake - and as always was encouraging and praised me for my progress. He was an excellent surgeon and a fine human being.

My wife and I hold his family in our hearts and prayers.

I will miss him greatly.

Lynda and I offer our deepest sympathy and prayers for your great loss. I can't express how much we thought of Dr. Short. Four years ago, he repaired my shoulder; and on October 31, 2005 he replaced my knees. I remember how happy he was when I carried him my scorecard after playing eighteen holes of golf just twelve weeks after the replacements. I worked hard in rehab because he was the kind of doctor and person that inspired you to work hard to recover, because I believe that was his passion, "to see his patients healthy and happy". He has given me the opportunity to live out my retirement years in a healthy and productive lifestyle. I regret, so much, that his life was cut short; but, he was a wonderful man, excellent surgeon, and I am sure a loving husband and father. Thank you so much for sharing him with the world.

Our sympathy goes out to the Short family and Mary Ann. Dr. Short was so smart and funny and no matter how bad you felt when you got to his office you felt better when you left knowing he cared about you. When Brian broke his arm in 1995 I took him to Dr. Short's office instead of the emergency room. He popped the bone in place and put the cast on and off we went. We went back to get the cast off 6 weeks later and Dr. Short said the arm had healed perfectly. I was thanking him for healing my son and he said "I was merely the instrument". How that touched my heart. We are glad to have had him in our lives even for a short time.

He was incredibly kind and very gentle and terribly funny. I could tell from some of his comments that he loved and feared our Lord, and I pray that it will give you comfort that he is with his Savior. I pray too that you will be comforted as you deal with this sudden loss. I just wanted to share with you that your father/husband made a deep impression on me in just a brief acquaintance.

Dr. Short was a compassionate doctor. I was thankful to see him and he treated me with kindness and humanity that was refreshing. Now, he "walks through the valley of the shadow of death"(Psalms 23:4), but as the rest of that verse goes on to say, nothing to be afraid of awaits him. Christ has gone before him and returned to guide Dr. Short to the other side. Jesus got a wonderful reward at the end of that journey, and he promised a man who was dying with him that Paradise would be that man's eternal home(Luke 23:42,43). Dr. Short can say, as all those who respect God "give me back my life because of your unfailing love"(Psalms 119:159). Until that day of reunion, God comfort you, family and faith support you. Respectfully; Robin Harris

I only had the priviledge to be a patient of Dr. Short for only a short time, and I was so pleased and happy to meet such a kind caring man.

So sad for the family of Dr. Short. We just saw him about 2 weeks ago--checkup from last year's surgery. When Haskell needed to see someone about his knee, we picked him at random out of several orthopedic surgeons and found him to be such a gifted and tallented doctor. We will miss him!

Dr Short saved my arm about 15 years ago. I had a wreck and went for months without any progress before I met him. I was a teenager without insurance. He took me in, did surgery, and I was healed. Since then he has cared for my toddler, numerous family members, and friends. I always trusted him and appreciated his sence of humor. He was a hero to many.

Dearest Beverly, Brad and Michael, How shocked and saddened we were to learn today of Bruce's untimely loss to you all! I have often recalled various conversations your dad and I had when you were in my class, Brad. I have even passed some of his words on to others, always conscious of where they had originated. Your father was a unique man, Brad & Michael; and you were blessed to call him your father. He was one of few fathers coming regularly to parent/teacher conferences. He had wisdom and a caring spirit, buoyed by zest for life, humor and perspective! He has placed an important mark upon your character that his passing will never erase. I am sad that he will not be a physical part of your life passages; but his spirit will be forever present. . . Run a good race, and know he cheers for you from a better place! May you each feel upheld by many prayers! May you revel in sweet memories! Love, Ms. "T"

Every now and then, God puts someone in this world to be an example of what we all should strive to be...Honest, hardworking, ethical, but with the heart of a child. I had the Privilege to work with such a person. Dr. Short taught me knee and shoulder anatomy, but mor important, life anatomy. He was a hero to his patients, a wonderful surgeon, a great teacher, and he was my friend. I will remember always his honesty, his smile, and how he tried to outsing James Taylor in the OR. We all loved him. I will miss my friend. Heaven's gain is our loss.
